Position Statement: Jefferson County Commission Betrays Our County
The Jefferson County Democratic Association strongly condemns the summary removal of all the members of the Jefferson County Development Authority. The Commission’s action on July 8 was both warrantless and without warning.
The Commission says it will create a new Development Authority, with fewer members. But why? Lack of information welcomes unlimited speculation.
- Is this a further attempt to consolidate power and disenfranchise the residents of Jefferson County?
- Why did the Commission ban municipalities from having representation on the Development Authority?
- Was this state’s open meetings law followed?
- Dismissed members want to invest in our agricultural economy, one of Jefferson County’s greatest strengths. Does the Commission oppose such priorities?
- And why impose a “loyalty oath” on new members, in violation of the First Amendment of the US Constitution?
If the Commission has substantive reasons for reconstituting the Development Authority, it should first hold a public hearing on the question. After that, the Commission should place a clearly defined item on its agenda for a future meeting.
Four of the five members of the County Commission were elected less than a year ago promising transparency. Why have they instead shrouded themselves in a veil of secrecy about this decision?
