A Compliment to We The People from a Lifelong Democrat
I have been a life-long Democrat since my high school days when the efforts to end the Vietnam War and the Senate Watergate hearings solidified for me which political party was the good guys and which was not. That said, I am actually writing this letter to compliment Jefferson County’s conservative “We the People” organization for sponsoring the recent (August 10) debate between the two major candidates for the District 100 seat in the West Virginia House of Delegates. I also commend both candidates, Democrat Jenny Thacker and Republican Bill Ridenour, for agreeing to participate in that debate. Overall, the behavior of all those involved, including those in attendance, was civil, professional and informative.
To be sure, the venue for this debate was the opposite of a “neutral” setting, as it was held as part of the regular monthly meeting of the WTP organization. And the topics designated for debate were tilted toward subjects designed to animate the home team. It also appeared that Mr. Ridenour had been given a heads-up to prepare for one particular feature of the question-and-answer session that Ms. Thacker only learned of upon arrival. Clearly Ms. Thacker showed tremendous courage in agreeing to such an arrangement given the host.
Also, I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about attending this forum. I was nervous because I strongly disagree with so many of the views espoused by Tea Party persons over the years. And, not surprisingly, Mr. Ridenour did utter a few false and nasty characterizations of Ms. Thacker along with some hateful descriptions of our neighboring Democratically led states.
But, in total, the event came off in a respectful and professional manner. Both candidates were able to express their views and positions in a calm and complete fashion with little interruptions from the audience, the moderator or each other. There were also a few instances when the candidates agreed. In addition, the WTP officials hosting the gathering were cordial to all attendees, whether members or not. This is particularly admirable as it appeared that the audience was nearly even split between supporters of Ms. Thacker and of Mr. Ridenour. I was especially pleased by the manner of the debate moderator who conducted the proceedings in a fair and systematic manner.
Of course, a proper candidate debate should be held in a more even-handed and non-partisan forum. But I get why Ms. Thacker will take advantage of any opportunity to directly contrast her positions and appeal with those of Mr. Ridenour.
So, I tip my hat to WTP organization for this recent debate and to those in attendance, including the candidates. If only briefly, it was a good reminder that, as Americans, we really can disagree without being disagreeable.
